Abstract

<p><em>Culture plays a pivotal role in shaping individuals’ behavior and experiences. In the context of education, reading culture refers to the development of positive reading attitudes among students and children over time. As emphasized by anthropologist James Spradley, culture enables individuals to interpret experiences and influence behavior. Reading, as defined by Nssien (2007), is not only a regular activity but also a cultivated attitude and skill that promotes consistent engagement and enjoyment. It is widely regarded as the most crucial factor determining academic success and personal development. Reading is not just about decoding words; it is an essential skill for understanding the world, fostering critical thinking, and ensuring effective communication. For a nation to develop, a large proportion of its citizens must possess literacy skills. The correlation between reading and national development is clear: societies that prioritize reading are more likely to achieve improvements in education, employment, and overall well-being. As noted by Wawie (2010), reading serves as a central force in the development process, directly influencing the quality of life and the ability to adapt to modern challenges. This study explores the significance of cultivating a strong reading culture as a means of driving sustainable development, both at the individual and national levels. By emphasizing the role of reading in educational achievement and societal growth, this work highlights the need for concerted efforts to promote reading habits within communities.</em></p>
