Abstract

Social media has become an indispensable communication tool, enabling the exchange of information and transactions locally and internationally through internet and ICT-based platforms. While social media offers significant benefits, including promoting values and facilitating effective communication, its misuse can lead to harmful consequences. This study highlights both the positive and negative impacts of social media on religion, politics, social, economic, and cultural life, particularly in Africa. Misuse of social media can mislead youths, expose them to criminal activities, drug abuse, and extremist ideologies, including recruitment into terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP in North Eastern Nigeria. The study emphasizes the urgent need for political, religious, and traditional institutions to guide youths, mitigate risks, and educate them on the responsible use of social media. Proper use of these platforms can foster informed, productive, and value-driven societies, while misuse can have destructive social consequences
