Abstract

The surge in online grocery shopping is intricately linked with the expansion of broadband services and internet accessibility, as indicated by a Data Monitor Report in 2010. This transformation represents a significant opportunity, particularly for emerging nations like Saudi Arabia, where information technology plays a pivotal role in fostering growth and progress, as highlighted by AlGhamdi, Nguyen, Nguyen, and Drew in 2011. Saudi Arabia is currently witnessing a remarkable trend characterized by the widespread adoption of the internet and the rapid proliferation of social media applications. With global rankings of third in smartphone penetration and 64th in internet access, Saudi Arabia possesses advanced ICT infrastructure. However, the embrace of e-commerce has been relatively gradual among its citizens, as observed by Al Ghamdi, Nguyen, Nguyen, and Drew in 2011. This contrasts with Western countries, where online grocery shopping has gained enthusiastic acceptance, as underscored by Kim and Forsythe in 2010. This paper delves into the unique landscape of e-commerce in Saudi Arabia, shedding light on the factors influencing its adoption. While the internet has seamlessly integrated into grocery shopping routines in Western societies, its adoption in the Arab world remains a relatively uncharted territory, as noted by Al Balushi and Al Lawati in 2012.
