Abstract

Commentators on religion often attribute intra-faith intolerance to the indoctrination of members, yet limited empirical data exist on the root causes of such conflicts. This study, titled “Assessing Intra-Faith Cohesion in Nigeria through Group Communication: The Gombe Community Score Card Project,” employed both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine intra-faith dynamics among Christian leaders and community members in Jeka Da Fari, Federal Low Cost, and Tunfure in Gombe, Gombe State. Funded by a consortium including The Kukah Centre, Development Initiative for West Africa, Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, and Care International UK, the study utilized the Community Score Card framework. Findings revealed that intra-faith conflicts stem primarily from poor leadership, the prosperity gospel, and doctrinal differences. To strengthen cohesion, the study advocates leadership grounded in merit, mutual respect, and a focus on the gospel of salvation. It concludes that effective feedback mechanisms, equity, justice, and collaborative engagement between leaders and their congregations are essential tools for fostering intra-faith unity in Nigeria.
