Abstract

<p><em>This paper examines the impact of the local wisdom known as "Merti Code," a cultural practice of communities along the Code River, on river environmental preservation in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study analyzes both empirical observations and policy frameworks regarding government regulations on river management. The findings reveal that the implementation of "Merti Code" significantly contributes to maintaining a clean river environment, preserving a balanced aquatic ecosystem, and providing economic benefits to both the local community and the Yogyakarta City government through cultural tourism, which has been an annual event since 2000. The study further highlights that community belief and trust in the principles of "Merti Code" are more effective in sustaining river cleanliness and environmental stewardship than formal government regulations alone.</em></p>
