Abstract

Since the inception of pesticide production in India in 1952, marked by the establishment of benzene hexachloride (BHC) manufacturing plants near Calcutta, the country has evolved into a significant player in the global pesticide market. Notably, Hindustan Insecticides Ltd. initiated the production of DDT (1,1,1-trichloro-2,2bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane) shortly thereafter. Today, India stands as the second largest producer of pesticides in Asia and holds the twelfth position globally. Over the decades, there has been a consistent upward trajectory in the production of technical grade pesticides, reflecting a remarkable growth from 5,000 metric tonnes in 1958 to 102,240 metric tonnes in 1998. This trend underscores the continuous expansion and advancement within both the manufacturing and formulation sectors of the pesticide industry in India
