Abstract

This study explores the relationship between Egyptian journalists and social media through a survey conducted in July and August 2018 on a sample of 120 journalists working in major national and private print and electronic newspapers and news sites. In-depth interviews were also conducted with editors and media professionals. Findings indicate a growing trend among journalists to use social media, particularly Facebook, primarily to promote newspapers and press content rather than as a source of information. Respondents emphasized the importance of credibility over speed to avoid publishing false news. While social media is being used as an information source, many journalists expressed concern that the future may favor social media over traditional media, highlighting the need for the industry to develop new strategies to adapt.
