Abstract

Development is unattainable in the face of discrimination, and harmful widowhood practices constitute a denial of women’s rights. This study examined the role of local radio in eradicating harmful widowhood practices in North Central Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated the prevalence of these practices, the exposure of communities to local radio, the extent to which radio programmes address the issue, and the influence of these programmes on public attitudes. Anchored on the Agenda Setting and Social Responsibility theories, the study employed a survey method, using questionnaires administered to elders, community leaders, and widows. Findings reveal that widows continue to face harmful practices, local radio addresses the issue infrequently, and such practices negatively affect widows. The study recommends concerted efforts by government agencies, NGOs, and programme producers to enhance radio programming aimed at eradicating harmful widowhood practices.
