Abstract

This paper examines the significant contributions of African oral literature as a tool for national development, with a focus on Tiv oral poetry as the primary case study. The study analyzes renditions of various bards in Tivland, exploring how their works address societal concerns. It highlights the relevance of Tiv oral poetry in modern society, demonstrating that its themes extend beyond traditional preoccupations to champion socio-economic and political change. Additionally, the research critically revisits the Western scholarly portrayal of African oral literature, arguing that erroneous interpretations have hindered its recognition on the global stage. The paper recommends correcting these misconceptions to allow African oral literature to gain its rightful place among world literatures. Finally, the study seeks to inspire further research into other aspects of Tiv orature as instruments for national development
