Abstract

Nigeria’s linguistic diversity, with over 500 languages, presents unique challenges and opportunities in educational contexts. In Lagos State, Yoruba is the dominant language, while English serves as the official medium of instruction in schools. This dual-language environment can foster cultural exchange and inclusivity, yet it also has the potential to create communication barriers in classrooms. The present study explores the impact of language variations on communication and performance in secondary schools in Lagos. By examining how the coexistence of indigenous languages and English influences interaction among students, teachers, and administrators, this research aims to identify both the advantages and challenges posed by linguistic diversity. The study reveals that while language variations enrich the educational environment by promoting inclusivity and cultural understanding, they can also hinder effective communication, leading to misunderstandings, academic difficulties, and social isolation. The findings suggest that addressing language barriers through targeted language policies and pedagogical strategies could enhance communication and improve student performance in Lagos secondary schools.
