Abstract

Project success (PS) has long been a central focus of field researchers in the realm of project management (PM). Despite the considerable attention devoted to understanding the characteristics and variables conducive to project success, a noteworthy gap persists between the existing knowledge and the actual realization of successful projects. This apparent paradox prompts a reevaluation of the factors influencing PS, necessitating a deeper exploration into the intricacies of project dynamics. In this abstract, we navigate through the evolution of research on project success, highlighting the persistent challenges and the evolving landscape of project management. The seminal works of Ika (2009) and Mir & Pinnington (2014) underscore the significance of project success as a linchpin in effective project management. However, the disconnect between the extensive research endeavors and the limited success rates of projects raises critical questions about the efficacy of the established performance directions. Despite the formulation of standardized guidelines over the years, only a fraction of projects manage to attain success. This incongruity prompts a shift in focus towards uncovering the elusive elements that exert influence on project success. A myriad of scholars, including Ayat et al. (2021), Belout & Gauvreau (2004), Pacagnella et al. (2019), and Petter & Nils (2017), have recognized the imperative need to delve into the multifaceted dimensions of project success. Their investigations traverse diverse industries and project types, emphasizing the universality of the quest to unravel the elements shaping project outcomes. By scrutinizing the interplay of variables, these scholars contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the factors that underpin successful project delivery. This abstract advocates for a paradigm shift in project management research, moving beyond the conventional wisdom and delving into the intricacies of project success. It calls for an integrative approach that acknowledges the multifaceted nature of projects and the diverse contextual factors influencing their trajectories. By synthesizing the insights from various scholars, we aim to pave the way for a more comprehensive framework that aligns theory with the practical intricacies of project management
