Abstract

This study explores the role of indigenous languages in promoting Nigeria’s development in the twenty-first century. While colonization introduced Nigerians to bilingualism and the acquisition of English—now widely used in official communication and daily activities—it also relegated native languages to the background. This paper examines how indigenous languages can revitalize local knowledge and contribute to sustainable development. Unlike discourses on sustainable development, which often overlook the relevance of language, this study emphasizes that local knowledge, transmitted through indigenous languages, is crucial for national progress. The paper does not dwell on the dangers of linguistic fragmentation or English-language dominance but highlights the positive contributions of Nigeria’s indigenous languages to sustainable development
