Abstract

Caffeinated beverages have long been a staple in the lives of college students, with consumption driven by diverse motivations. However, a pressing concern arises in the form of caffeine overuse, as evidenced by recent research (Driver et al., 2020). This abstract delves into the intricate relationship between college students and caffeinated beverages, shedding light on the prevalence of caffeine overuse within this demographic. Drawing insights from a comprehensive survey conducted across five geographically dispersed universities in the United States, the paper reveals a startling finding: approximately 92% of surveyed students reported caffeine consumption within the past year. Moreover, this research underscores a troubling trend of increasing numbers, emphasizing the urgency of addressing caffeine overuse through targeted educational initiatives. The college environment, marked by academic pressures and a culture of constant connectivity, has contributed to the pervasive consumption of caffeinated beverages among students. However, the study conducted by Mahoney et al. (2019) reveals a critical gap in awareness and education regarding the potential hazards of caffeine overuse. Despite its prevalence, there is a lack of informed decision-making among students, perpetuating a cycle of increased consumption without a nuanced understanding of its consequences. This abstract aims to underscore the importance of addressing this educational deficit to curb the rising trend of caffeine overuse. As caffeine consumption becomes an integral part of the college lifestyle, the abstract emphasizes the need for proactive educational interventions. The findings from the survey paint a vivid picture of the scale of caffeine consumption among college students, signaling a call to action for educational institutions. By bridging the knowledge gap and promoting responsible caffeine use, universities can play a pivotal role in fostering a healthier relationship between students and caffeinated beverages. In conclusion, this abstract provides a snapshot of the current landscape of caffeine consumption among college students, highlighting the concerning trend of overuse. The imperative lies in implementing targeted educational strategies to empower students with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their caffeine intake.
