Abstract

Groundwater is an important source of water for irrigation and drinking in Burkina Faso. However, the demand for groundwater is increasing due to population growth and climate change. This study investigated the exploitation rate and sustainability of groundwater resources in the alluvial aquifer of Karfiguéla. The results showed that the aquifer has a high potential for irrigation, but it is already being exploited at a high rate. This could lead to groundwater depletion in the future. The study recommends that the government of Burkina Faso take steps to manage groundwater resources sustainably, such as by introducing water pricing and regulations on groundwater abstraction
