NAVIGATING COMMUNICATION CULTURE SHOCK: ACADEMIC ADAPTATION OF NIGERIAN POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS IN THE UK

Abstract

The globalization of education has increased the number of students pursuing postgraduate studies in foreign countries, with the United Kingdom (UK) emerging as a preferred destination for Nigerian students. The UK offers a rich academic environment and the opportunity for students to acquire advanced qualifications. However, the transition to a new cultural and educational context often presents challenges, particularly in communication. Communication culture shock, stemming from differences in communication styles, norms, and practices, can have a profound effect on the academic experiences of Nigerian postgraduate students. This study examines the influence of communication culture shock on Nigerian postgraduate students in the UK, exploring how these communication barriers shape their academic success, social integration, and overall experience. The research aims to highlight the challenges faced by these students and provide recommendations for institutions to support smoother transitions for international students. By identifying the key aspects of communication culture shock and its impact on academic outcomes, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the role communication plays in the academic and personal development of Nigerian postgraduate students in the UK.
