Abstract

Communication is a major shaping force in life generally and in organizations in particular. This study aimed to: (a) identify communication activities and practices at Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO); (b) examine how management utilizes communication to promote employee commitment; and (c) assess the influence of prevailing organizational communication on employee commitment. From a population of 474, a sample of 200 respondents was drawn, with 193 usable questionnaire responses retrieved. Additionally, two principal officers of the university were interviewed. Findings revealed that (a) IUO management deliberately employs communication activities to positively influence employee commitment, and (b) respondents confirmed that organizational communication influenced their commitment, although some indicated occasional discouragement from prioritizing the university over personal alternatives. Consequently, a communication audit is recommended to identify additional factors that may enhance employee morale and commitment
